Price and when pubished

The price of my magazine will be in the range of £2.50 to £3 for a regular issue, special issues such as bumper issues or holiday issues will cost around about £4 but the issues will be double in size and contain extra freebies such as promotional CD’s from popular and upcoming bands or mix tapes of bands to look out for in the forthcoming months/year. My magazine will be published once every two weeks, this relates to my price as I believe this is affordable for my target audience as then will be able to save up £2.50 - £3 over a fortnight from pocket money for the younger readers or money from EMA or work from the older readers. This is a reasonable price in comparison to other music magazines on the market at the current point in time.
Kerrang! - £2.20
Rock Sound - £3.99
Metal Hammer - £4.75
Blunt - £10
Q - £3.99

Target Audince.

The target audience that I have chosen to associate my magazine with will be people aged 15 – 25 as this is the mainstream. But can also be enjoyed by anyone who listens to the genres covered in my magazine or are just interested in music as a general topic. Examples of magazines that use the same target audience are; Kerrang!, NME and Q.

Which Music Genre I Chose

Choice of music genre:
My music magazine will be focused on alternative music, many genres fall under this category including Rock, Pop-Punk, Screamo, Punk,  Metal, Metalcore, Death metal etc.
Some of the bands that that fit into these genres are;
                                                         Suicide Silence-

Demoraliser-

Falling In Reverse-

I have chosen this particuar style for my magazine as these are the genre's i listen to the most and know the most about.

LIIAR analysis of the brief.

L – I want my masthead to stand out and catch people’s attention, this will make people want to look at the front cover of the magazine on which the price, issue number, features, competitions etc will be displayed. The main image will also be my main feature of several people stood together as a band or a single person acting as a solo artist, if it’s a group shot I will pick a location and stance that is suitable to the genre of that band. If I choose to feature a solo artist I will most likely use a close up shot as the background of the front page. There will be a bold house style that is eye-catching and fits with what types of genre’s my magazine will feature for example; If I did a pop music magazine I’d use colours such as purple, blue, pink, white and orange but if I did a rock music magazine I’d use colours such as red, black, dark blue, grey and white etc.
I – My magazine will have unique competitions that let you come work for the magazine for a couple of days, this would involve meeting bands and helping produce future issues. I believe that this will make the audience want to read the magazine and enter the competition. It will contain exclusive interviews and early release download codes to bands upcoming albums before they are released to the general public, this gives my magazine a hook that other magazines don’t have.
I – I want my magazine to help people who are interested in music or journalism by having competitions for bands to play festivals/win studio time/support acts for major bands and for people to come and write articles for the magazine/interview bands etc.
A – My target audience would be teenagers/young adults/adults and anyone who generally likes music.
R – My magazine will represent the target audience in a positive way, it will show issues that they can relate to such as Q&A pages with a celebrity answering questions which people send in to the magazine, the questions don’t have to be music related but can be about life problems in which they would get advice on situations etc. The magazine will have interviews with bands/artists have ask questions on their life as a teenager/young adult which should help the readers of my magazine relate to the artists.

The brief.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).

Evaluation

I believe that my front cover and contents page of my magazine turned out to a decent standard, the front page has the Wyke college logo on the top of the page; making it easily recognisable to students and people who know of the college. The price and issue number are below the masthead on the left hand side, the colour of the text matches the overall house style of the magazine (the main colours been purple and white) and is in bold so it’s easy to read and noticeable. The background of my front cover is an image of the Oak building with a student photoshopped in front of it, this gives the impression that the student is at college and the expression on his face makes it look like he’s happy to be there. I believe this gives off the right impression to students and people looking to attend the college. I have placed two thumbnail photos onto the front page with captions above the photos, the captions and pictures relate to the stories I have chosen to feature inside my magazine. On the left hand side of the cover I have also chosen to add in some text about enrolment for the next college year and that applicants are now been accepted. I believe this will grab the attention of year 11 pupils reading the magazine and also anyone else who is interested in joining the college. The background of my contents page is a picture of the back of the Oak building with three student’s photoshopped onto the picture each of different angles each image is behind the previous image.  I have chosen five different stories to put onto the contents page, some linking to the features on the front cover.  There is a masthead at the top with the title of ‘Inside this issue’, the masthead is big and noticeable and I believe that it’s eye-catching. All of the text on this page follows the same house style as the rest of the magazine.
I think that this magazine would be helpful to students as it provides the latest information of things that are happening in the college and is a very informative magazine. I think that the magazine address’s and represents the target audience that I picked. My magazine represents students of Wyke as positive and happy people. This gives people the impression that it is a nice and friendly college and makes people want to come check it out. The fact that I have features on the front page that link to good things that Wyke students have done or things that help the students make people reading the magazine believe that the college cares for it’s students a lot and keeps improving the college and it’s facilities to accommodate the needs of the current students and students to come.

How i would advertise my magazine

I would advertise my magazine by promoting it around the college site or by creating a new section of the college’s website all about the magazine were you could download a free pdf file of the latest issue and also back issues as the magazine would be free anyway this would not affect the issue of people downloading the file rather then buying it. The way I would advertise it inside of the college would be to get form tutors to show a presentation on the magazine as each issue comes out. The section of the website that I would use for advertising would follow the same colour scheme as the magazine (purple and blue). A lot of people just throw away free magazines/leaflets ect so there would be a sign informing people about the online copy. Below is a mock up of an idea of what the website section would look like, I think it catches peoples eyes because of the different shades of purple and white what I have used which matches the magazine, this also helps people know that they’re on the correct website.

3 Magazine LIIAR's

East Riding College Magazine LIIAR:
The front page of the magazine is very bland and only uses the colours black and white aside from the main image. The main image isn’t very eye-catching, the people in It are facing away from the camera and they’re stood in the snow, this doesn’t give much away about the college or what it is like. The masthead is very plain and so is the rest of the text. There are no thumbnails of other pictures to help illustrate any of the stories that are inside, the college logo and details are present on the bottom of the front cover. I don’t think that it represents the college very well or would attract attention from students. The contents page also has green in the colour scheme now as well as black and white; this makes it a bit more vibrant but not much. This page has picture thumbnails but none of them are captioned to you don’t know which story they link to, the features are listed on the left hand side of the page in a plain and simple way. I don’t think this magazine really reaches out to its target audience as it makes the college look very dull and boring. It doesn’t represent the college or it’s students either.

Grimsby Institute College Magazine LIIAR:
The front page of this magazine follows a simple house-style of blue, grey and white and is quite eye catching. The main image is 2 cartoon like students, the colours of the cartoons blend in with the background and doesn’t make the image ‘pop’. The college logo is present on the front page along with picture thumbnails and text showing features inside the magazine. The masthead is large and recognisable to the college. The contents page is quite crowded and messy. The list of features is on the right hand side of the page and each piece of text follows the colour scheme; black, red, blue, green. The left hand side of the contents page has adverts to do with the college on it. I believe this magazine represents the college quite well and would attract its correct target audience.

Lewisham College Magazine LIIAR:
The front cover of this magazine suggests that this is an arts college; the main image is of a student in dance wear in some form of dance move. The house-style behind the image is black and white and isn’t very eye-catching. Although I do think the main image represents students as if it is an arts college then it will be what a lot of students take or do as a hobby. The text on the front pages tells us about some of the features inside of the magazine but it has no picture thumbnails to illustrate the points. The logo of the college is at the bottom right of the front page but is only small. The contents page is quite plain with the features on the right hand side and an article about the winner of a competition of the left hand side of the page. This page only uses the colours white, black and pink and isn’t very eye-catching or appealing to students.

I –
  • ·        To produce a school/college magazine.

I-
  • ·        My magazine will hopefully grasp people’s attention and make the college look fun and interesting to year 11 pupils and also inform current students of new activities. It will make the college look appealing to all sorts of students because of the good academic records and fun atmosphere.

  • ·        Current college students/Parents of current college students.

R-
  • I want the magazine to represent the college in a positive way as I want to make the college look as fun and lively as possible, I want to make year 11 pupils want to attend the college and current Wyke students to stay at the college

Price & When Published.

The price of this magazine would be £1 or 50p if you have an NUS Card, and published monthly around 150 copies would be made or you could download a pdf file of the magazine from the college website. The price of the magazine would cover printing costs, ect. This is a reasonable and affordable price for college students.

Which college I picked and why.

The college I have picked is Wyke sixth form college, the reason I picked this is its where I go to college and there main colours are green and purple this will make it easier to create a simple yet effective colour scheme throughout the magazine. I can also take photos of the college whilst I’m there instead of travelling to other colleges and can use things that I know that are happening in the college in my magazine.

The brief

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photogaph of a student in medium close up plus some appropriately laid out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contens page o demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
